Messaging Overview       #

Messaging should be enabled only when you are deploying devices that support the feature (e.g. mSafety)

The messaging feature enables operators within the control centre to send out targeted messages to the devices of specific users. The messages themselves are limited in terms of size to either 48 characters or 20 characters in cases where the device has been set to use large font only.

The operator can select individual users to target messages towards, based on their organisation group, their location on a map or by searching and selecting from a wider group.

It is also possible to request a confirmation response or to provide two simple alternative responses (limit of 7 characters) to provide a limited two-way communication flow.

It is important to remember that these are IoT devices and communicate with the network on a fixed schedule. When sending a message, it will not be picked up by the device until its next scheduled comms check. This means that the messaging feature is not suitable for urgent notifications that require immediate action.

Once a message has been delivered, the device will automatically enter a period of high frequency comms (every minute for 10 minutes following receipt of a message), so a two-way communications period is possible once initial contact has been made

It is also possible to set an expiry date on a message so that messages that contain time specific information will not be delivered to devices that contact the network after the period of relevance has passed.

Some examples of specific use cases for the messaging function are:

  1. A broadcast message notifying staff or users of some non-urgent news or a reminder to complete a task.
  2. A request for a staff member to contact the control centre if they are available to undertake a task or visit a room.
  3. An alert message sent out to all residents in a facility that an incident has occurred and to be vigilant.
  4. A check-in message to someone who has gone into alert mode to ask if they are ok (comms frequency in alert is only 1 minute)
